Hope you guys are ready for February’s journal prompt! I have provided five inspirational quotes about birds.  Use all five for the month or pick and choose the one that resonates with you!

“What good are wings without the courage to fly.” –Atticus
“Until you spread your wings you will have no idea how far you can fly.” –Unknown
“Give the ones you love wings to fly, roots to come back and reasons to stay.” –Dalai Lama
“I would like to paint the way a bird sings.” –Claude Monet
“Use what talent you possess; the woods would be very silent if no bird sang except those that sound best.” –Henry Van Dyke

I’d love to explain how I created this spread from start to finish but I just can’t.  It’s from an old “art journal/junk journal” where I randomly put any left over paint or paper scraps I have while working on other art projects.  I hate wasting and this Moleskine journal is perfect for using it up.  I also practice different art techniques in it too.  I probably started this journal over six years ago and I add a little paint/collage here and there.

Anyhow, while cleaning out my craft room a few nights ago I came across this unfinished journal spread and thought it would be the perfect inspiration for February’s journal prompt.  I made these Aspen trees as practice when my mom and I were working on a Birch Tree painting she found on Youtube.

I fine-tuned the Aspen trees and their branches with a paint brush and white gel pen.  Then I added some birds using a technique from the book, “The Collage Workbook: How to Get Started and Stay Inspired” by Randel Plowman. I’ve never used this collage technique before, basically you print an image on tracing paper.  After I glued the birds on the page, I added some blue paint to their wings and fixed the bird’s feet because they looked wanky. Then I painted a few “leaves” and edged the ends of the paper with a blue ink pad. Art journaling in my creative notebook. Visual notebook. Creative sketchbook. Creative journaling. I’m not completely done with this spread.  I’m debating whether or not I should cut the two pages out to frame and matte or just leave it in my journal.  If I leave it in my journal I’ll probably add some writing to the page. I’m also uncertain about the birds.  I don’t know if I like them or not.  We’ll see!  That’s the fun thing about mixed media you can add paint and collage over and over again until you like it.  It is so forgiving!  Hope you enjoy this months journal prompt! Please share your lovely creations with me!
